Are These 427 Ford SOHC Heads Actually Former Parts Run By Dyno Don Nicholson? Want To Make A $25,000 Bet?

Well this is an interesting mystery! There’s a guy on eBay selling a set of period 427 Ford SOHC heads and he’s saying that they may have been used by the late Ford drag racing hero Dyno Don Nicholson back in the day. He admits that he did not buy the heads from Nicholson (who has been gone from this mortal coil since 2006) but that he got them from someone else. He has no idea as to when the stamping and etching work was added to the heads but guesses that they were stamped when they came in for a repair at a machine shop at some point. One of the combustion chamber has clearly been repaired so that much makes sense.

I guess the biggest question here is whether or not you want to take a $25,000 gamble on the parts. Now, even if they were run by Dyno Don are they actually worth any more than another set of the same heads to fit a 427 engine? If you are restoring an actual Dyno Don race car we think they they would be pretty freaking valuable. If you are building a SOHC motor for your project car you can get yourself a set of complete heads for less than $25,000. Now not much less, mind you, but less.

They are pretty awesome pieces either way and it is amazing to think that Ford engineers designed and produced them within a 90-day window. They must have been using all that CAD/CAM and advanced design software to get the job done…or they had a slide ruler and a pen.

Whether these heads were used by Dyno or not, they’re still neat. We secretly hope that they were because it would be another piece of his legacy that would live on for another day. Cool stuff…do you think it is legit?
