(Photos by Charles Wickam) – When it comes to cool drag strips, Little River Dragway in Texas is near the top. Operating since 1957, this place is a time warp to a no-frills era where the main concern was having a place to race and fancy details were not really high on anyone’s list. It is one of the neatest places in the country to host vintage style races because it is not much different looking now than it was 15, 20, even 40 years ago.
This is the second year of the vintage race the track hosts in the fall. For years there was another large old school race here and now the track is filling that hole in their schedule with this one and by all accounts, people love it. Sanctioned by the IHRA, we love tracks like Little River because they serve as the truthful base that keeps drag racing alive and thriving.
Lowering the obstacles to participation is a big deal and tracks like Little River that do not have the massive responsibilities some “super tracks” have are in a perfect position to throw the gates open, give people good traction, and provide a load of fun for a good value. They have been doing it since 1957 and they continue today.
