Best of BS 2017: This 9.62-second Mazda Savanna Blasts Down The Strip!

When Mazda dumped the 10A rotary into the Grand Familia series of cars, the goal was not to build a hot rod powered by the triangle of death…instead, it was meant to circumvent Japan’s tax system on cars. A Rotary engine has less capacity, but could make equal or greater power than a traditional inline-four engine. That’s fair and good, but when tuners figured out that the 12A rotary found in the RX-2 could be adapted and weaponized, well…sound the siren call of five-digit RPM readouts and let slip the clutch. The Savanna/RX-3 is by far and wide the most popular pre-RX-7 rotary car that Mazda cranked out in the 1970s, and they have a great following Down Under, partially due to their winning ways in Class C touring car racing. But this ain’t no touring car…no, this is the fastest street-registered 12A-powered car in Australia, and it howls, dances, and makes what should be a simple, straight-line affair a dramatic performance. And the noise…oh, the wail of a pissed off Wankel rotary is something to behold. We bet that the cops follow this thing around, just waiting for a mis-step when it’s out and about…
