Another New Nostalgia Nitro Funny Car Is Born! Bits and Pieces Is One Bad Ass Bird

Another New Nostalgia Nitro Funny Car Is Born! Bits and Pieces Is One Bad Ass Bird

When Keith Davidson sent me an email yesterday with the info and photos on their new Nostalgia Nitro Funny Car, I was super excited. First off it’s a Firebird body, which just looks as bad ass as can be, and second it’s Big Block Chevrolet powered. What?!?! Yeah. Awesome right? Okay, so nobody has run a Big Block Chevrolet Nitro car in years that has been what we would call consistent or successful, but that doesn’t mean this bastard won’t be one of the coolest match race cars ever. Oh, and it’s not some new bodied car either. This started as a real deal 40 year old Funny Car body that has been modified, shaped, and stretched to fit the new Gordy’s chassis. We’re in love.

If you are a fan of a GM powered GM Funny Car, then get in line with us. We can’t wait to see this sucker make it’s debut. We’ll be waiting for video, so stay tuned and we’ll share it when we get it.

This team has been working for four years to get the Bits and Pieces Nostalgia Nitro Funny Car completed, and ready for it’s debut this month. The team will test through the remainder of 2016 in preparation for the 2017 match race season.

Here are some of the specs:

Body: 1977 Firebird – The project, which consisted of stretching the 40 year old body 8 inches, tinning and treeing, finish body work and prep and paint work, was performed almost exclusively in house by Jeff Bradt.

Chassis: Gordy’s 125 inch wheel base.

Engine: 438 cubic inch Big Block Chevrolet, blown, on Nitro.

Team: Consists of Keith Davidson, Jeff Bradt, John Napoli, Ron Cocca, and Ethan Green.

Performance: The team expects ET’s in the 6 second range at over 200 mph in match race trim, with an emphasis on reliability and fun.

Support: Help on the project has come from Rocky’s Rod Shop in High Bridge, NJ, who provided chromoly tubing, and interior tin work supplies. Albany Autobody Supply provided the paint and materials for the bodywork, and Elmo’s Autobody in Ballston Lake, NY did the initial bodywork and paint. Jim Signorelli handled the custom airbrush work along with help from Ferrin Motorsports Graphics.

Ron Cocca’s Courier Express in Waterford, NY is providing the fuel and support sponsorship this car will desperately need, and Gil’s Garage of Burnt Hills, NY is pitching in for Oil and Supplies.

It is really easy to imagine the pistons, rods, bearings, and other wearable parts that a typical Nostalgia Nitro Funny Car team will go through, but what people are quick to forget is the oil, fuel, brake clean, shop rags, paper towels, assembly lube, anti seize, spark plugs, gaskets, etc that are all critical in making one run for more than a couple seconds. We’re glad to see the Bits and Pieces team is working to make sure their car is going to be a real show piece and riot to watch go down the track.

The team will be aiming at select match races in 2017 with a major emphasis on having fun and burning some nitro. We are jealous as hell.

Good luck boys!

C’mon, Ray Zeller can build a 5 second Chevrolet funny car engine blind folded! Had John Rodeck done that Chevy block a few years earlier that engine would have survived a lot longer in fuel racing. Steve Nichols Mill Road Boys Chevy Camaro ran 5s with Zeller power! Some may argue that Johnny Davis could build a more powerful Chevy fuel engine but…. who knows. The engine needs NO excuses in the right hands. Get the timing advance and clutch right and let’er eat!
