Steve Torrence raced to his first Top Fuel victory in over two years Sunday at the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals at Bandimere Speedway.

Jack Beckman (Funny Car), Larry Morgan (Pro Stock) and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) were also victorious at the 14th of 24 events of the 2015 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season and first of the NHRA Western Swing.

Torrence powered his Capco Racing/Torrence Motorsports dragster to the winner’s circle with a 3.925-second performance at 319.37 mph to earn his fifth career victory, first at Denver and first since Bristol 2013. Torrence, who defeated Tony Schumacher’s 3.940 at 305.08 in his U.S. Army dragster, earned the seventh spot in the Traxxas Nitro Shootout at Indianapolis.

“I thought I saw him ahead of me, and I said to myself, ‘No, don’t pull this on me,’ ” said Torrence, who moves to ninth in points. “I saw him out there for a little bit and then he disappeared, and I thanked the good Lord when my win light came on because we needed this win. We needed to get back into the Traxxas showdown. Tony and I are friends, but when you run a DSR car, you have to bring you’re A-game. To beat him on the mountain is unbelievable. It’s been way too long to get into the winner’s circle. It’s not representative of the team we have. I’m getting confidence in myself, and that’s a good thing.”

Schumacher, the current Top Fuel points leader and No. 2 qualifier, raced past Steven Chrisman, Clay Millican and Brittany Force before falling to Torrence in the finals. He holds an 85 point advantage over teammate Antron Brown.

Beckman powered his Infinite Hero Foundation Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car to the win for the fourth time this year with a 4.190 at 293.92, beating John Force in the final. Beckman, the 2012 world champ, has 19 career victories, putting him tenth on the all-time wins list in Funny Car. This is his third career win at Bandimere Speedway.

““(My crew chief) Jimmy Prock intimidates the other crew chiefs,” said Beckman, who moves to second in Funny Car points. “He’ll force them to do things they may not be comfortable with. Last year, I was 0-6 against JFR, so I figured I had paid my dues. To do it in the final round today, when they really had the better car throughout the weekend — to beat the No. 1 qualifier, the winningest driver of all time, and at the Mopar race — this is just a perfect weekend.”

Force was appearing in his fourth final round appearance of the season and second against Beckman. Force, a six-time winner at Denver, entered eliminations as the No. 1 qualifier and jumped to third in the Funny Car point standings.

In Pro Stock, Morgan raced to a final round holeshot victory over three-time defending winner Allen Johnson with a 6.944 at 199.02 at the controls of his FireAde Chevy Camaro. With the win, Morgan earned his 12th career victory and second of the season. The final featured an intense staging duel at the starting line, lasting one minute and 45 seconds before Johnson finally staged.

“What a wonderful race!” said Morgan, who won his first Denver event in 1990. “This was probably my best win this year. The Four-Wide (event) was cool because I got to beat three guys at one time. Coming up here and racing Allen, though, I give those guys all the respect in the world for being in the final round nine straight years. Nobody will ever do what he’s done up here, and I commend him for that. Those guys are still the ‘King of the Mountain.’ I just got lucky enough to keep it for one race. He still owns this place.”

Johnson, who was appearing in his fourth final of the season with one win, was looking for his fourth consecutive victory at Thunder Mountain.

Krawiec raced to his 28th career victory in Pro Stock Motorcycle with a 7.239 at 185.51 holeshot final round result over Hector Arana Jr. on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson. The current Pro Stock Motorcycle points leader earned his first win of the season and third at Bandimere Speedway.

“In the final, I could hear him next to me,” said Krawiec, a three-time world champ. “I will say one thing; I knew I had to be about .020 on the Tree, and I was .025. I usually don’t race that way. I don’t usually have to push that hard, but this year I do. I really didn’t want the final to be that close, but I couldn’t ask for any better. It always makes the driver look good to win on a holeshot.”

Recent Chicago winner Arana Jr. raced his Lucas Oil Buell past Freddie Camarena, Steve Johnson and defending world champ and 2014 event winner Andrew Hines to reach the final. Arana Jr. sits second in points, trailing Krawiec by 36.

The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series moves to Sonoma, Calif. for the second of three stops during the NHRA Western Swing for the NHRA Sonoma Nationals, July 31-Aug. 2.

NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Results from Bandimere

FLETCHER PEAKS IN BANDIMERE

MORRISON, Colo. – Dan Fletcher picked up his 92nd national event win this weekend at the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals held at scenic Bandimere Speedway. Six Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series categories were contested at the event with racers in the hunt for year-end divisional and national championships.

Fletcher, racing out of Churchville, N.Y., secured his 48th win in the Super Stock category when Jim Hawkins left too early at the tree. With the win light on, Fletcher crossed the stripe in his Chevy Camaro at 11.259 seconds at 102.15 mph. Hawkins has one national event win to his name, which happened here back in 1989.

Ryan Montford reached the Stock Eliminator winners circle laying down a 10.028 second, 119.04 mph pass to defeat Scott Burton’s 11.350 second, 98.98 mph run. Burton was looking to repeat his win from 2011 at this event, yet was denied by Montford with his first national event victory.

The Super Comp final would reveal a first time winner when Bill Percival and Justin Ewing squared off in the money round. Ewing got off the line first but it wasn’t enough to take Percival, who ran dead-on his 9.500 second dial granting him the coveted NHRA Wally trophy.

Michael Miller shot his ’27-T Ford off the line with a .005 reaction time, which translated into a holeshot win over Brian Percival. Miller’s 10.539 second, 138.86 mph lap defeated Percival’s 10.518 second, 131.95 mph run for his seventh career national event win, who also won the divisional event contested here last month.

Victoria Johnson and Adam Chioda met up in the Top Dragster final to determine who would come out with their first national event win. Johnson got out of the gate first and reached the finish line stripe at 7.201 seconds, 186.46 mph defeating Chioda’s runner up lap of 7.974 seconds, 161.85 mph.

Top Sportsman title went to Ron Williams as he left the tree with a solid .004 reaction time and never looked back. He drove his Pontiac GTO to a 8.030 second, 168.83 pass to his first NHRA national event win over J.J. Heber, clocking in at 7.007, 192.55 as he broke out.

West Central Division racers head to Kansas for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series doubleheader at Heartland Park Topeka. The NHRA Lucas Oil Doubleheader Weekend presented by Aeromotive will feature back-to-back divisional events, Aug. 13-14 (Thursday and Friday) and Aug. 15-16 (Saturday and Sunday), preceded by a test ’n’ tune day, Wednesday, Aug. 12.

NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES – PACIFIC DIVISION

CALIFORNIA NATIVES DOMINATE IN SONOMA

SONOMA, Calif.– Seven California racers took home wins from the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series presented by Korbel at Sonoma Raceway over the weekend. Racers from all over the state were represented in the final rounds making this a golden weekend for NHRA racing in California.

Brentwood, Calif., competitor Jim Grossi Jr., took home the trophy in Super Stock and the second of his career.  Grossi posted a winning run of 9.725 seconds, 112.50 mph over Dennis Paz, Stockton, Calif., 11.842 seconds, 102.98 mph runner-up finish. Paz had a big starting line advantage, but Grossi took the win with a margin of victory of .0400 seconds, approximately 6 feet. This is a comeback performance for Grossi, who earned his first win in Super Stock in 1997.

Val Torres, Valinda, Calif., who won here last year, was better off the line posting a 0.013 second reaction time and a winning run of 8.959 seconds, 159.87 mph. Jerry Dean, Olathe, Kan., who was making his first final round appearance, posted a runner up finish of 8.902 seconds, 159.83 mph.

In Super Street, it was a battle of California natives with Joseph Greco, San Jose, Calif., running 10.891 seconds, 146.23 mph and taking the double breakout win. Greco ran closer to the index over Richard Tucker, Acampo, Calif., who posted a 10.869 second, 127.91 mph runner- up finish.

Mike DePalma, Glendale, Ariz., finished his run in Comp Eliminator posting a time of 9.044 seconds, 139.70 mph over Scott McClay, Tehachapi, Calif.  McClay had been recording great lights in the prior rounds, but he just missed the tree by -0.003 in the final to give the automatic Competition Eliminator win to DePalma.

Other racers visiting the winner’s circle this weekend were Greg Harrison, Livermore, Calif., in Super Gas, and Jody Lang, Puyallup, Wash., in Stock Eliminator. Garrett Richards, Tacoma, Wash., ran 6.031 seconds, at 241.80 mph and took the win in the West Coast Outlaw Pro Mod Series.  In the division’s Top Sportsman class it was Keith White, Paradise, Calif., taking the win, while Dean Hall, Guerneville, Calif., won in Top Dragster.

In the Sportsman Motorcycle class presented by Harley-Davidson, Jake Havens, Edmonds, Wash., was first off the line and held the win. Mike Beland, West Palm Beach, Fla., grabbed the win in Top Fuel Harley over 2014 National Champion Tommy Grimes. Janette Thornley laid down a 7.328 second 180.40 mph over Dennis Fisher, Dayton, Ohio to capture the Pro Fuel Harley win. Back in the winner’s circle was Michael Beland, for Hot Street Harley; Dani Grimes, Grass Valley, Calif. took the trophy for Pro Gas Harley; and the Screamin’ Eagle Performance Harley went to John Cabral, Tracy, Calif.

Pacific Division racers head to Rocky Mountain Raceway for a double header in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, September, 25-26 and 27-28.

NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES – NORTH CENTRAL DIVISION

DEMKE WINS IN OHIO

HEBRON, Ohio – North Central Division NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Buckeye Fuel Wars came to National Trail Raceway just outside Columbus, Ohio over the weekend with Chris Demke and Paul Noakes scoring prominent wins.

Demke, Tujunga, Calif., increased his national champion point lead by taking out Mia Tedesco, Pittsburgh, Pa., in Top Alcohol Dragster.  Demke had a small edge at the green and lead all the way recording a lap of 5.388 seconds at 269.83 mph to Tedesco’s 5.425 at 261.98. This was Demke’s 24th divisional win, in 43 final round appearances, and his second this year. Demke is in a battle for the Lucas Oil National Championship and leads Tedesco by 106 points at the top spot.

In the final of Top Alcohol Funny Car, Paul Noakes laid down a pass of 5.835 seconds at 247.97 mph over Chris Foster, Davenport, Iowa.  This win adds to Noakes regional point total for the lead in the North Central Division.

The Comp Eliminator final went to David Rampy, Piedmont, Ala. Rampy left first with a great light and secured the win over Greg Kamplain, Brownsburg, Ind., with a margin of victory of 0.0550 seconds. This win marks Rampy’s 46th divisional victory, with 31 of them in Competition Eliminator.

In Super Stock there was a heads up battle in the final round.  Todd Frantz, Louisville, Ky., went 9.815 seconds at 130.02 mph and had about three tenths advantage over Brianna Kelly, Fairfield, Ohio, who recorded a lap of 10.046 seconds at 130.90 mph. This was Frantz’s fourth divisional win and his third in Super Stock.

Super Gas had a great final round matchup, with Steve Hoyt, Fort Wayne, Ind., who was in the top ten nationally last year, and Edmond Richardson, Greenbier, Tenn., who has multiple wins in multiple categories.  Richardson had a small advantage at the green, but gave up the stripe and Hoyt slipped by for the win. Hoyt’s margin of victory was 0.0220 seconds, approximately 5 feet. This is Hoyt’s sixth divisional win, fourth in Super Gas.

Austin Richardson, Greenbrier, Tenn., son of Edmond Richardson, put together a 0.016 package to secure the win in Stock Eliminator. This is his second divisional win in Stock Eliminator, and is a perfect two-for-two in final rounds, having won in Indianapolis already this year.

Other racers visiting the winners circle were Kendra Rienschield, Brookville, Ind., who forced Jeremy Mason, Waco, Ky. into a breakout to earn the Super Comp trophy; and Marsha Mc Fall, Tipp City, Ohio, took her first win in Super Street over Rudy Matthews, Ohio City, Ohio.  Jerry Albert, Avon, Ohio, walked away with a trophy in Top Sportsman; Mike Trauth, Alexandria, Ky., beat out Ashely Tidrick, Logansport, Ind. in Top Dragster; and in Junior Dragster Logan Galbraith, Indianapolis, beat out Marissa Bay, Blacklick, Ohio with a margin of victory of .0670 seconds.

Battles Intensify To Earn Championship Points

Final Race for the 2015 Championship and PBIR Team Finals Spots

JUPITER, Fla. (July 27, 2015) – When the IHRA Summit SuperSeries Bracket Racing Series returns from its summer vacation on Saturday, August 1 at Palm Beach International Raceway (PBIR), drivers and teams will have the points championship and the postseason on the line.

Of course at the top, there are the fights for season championships, however this race is also the cutoff for the IHRA Team Finals, drivers are jockeying for 40 positions available on the PBIR team

Bill Pollard, pictured here, will try and win the Top Eliminator Championship.
See all the 2015 IHRA Summit SuperSeries Champions of PBIR earn their crowns on August 1.

The 2015 season in Top Eliminator (Box) Sponsored by South Florida Choppers has seen Bill Pollard atop the championship standings since February. Pollard boasts only a 50 point lead over second place Randy Weber and 82 point lead over third place James Snyder. With the standings this close Pollard will have to hold off the competition to take home the championship.

In Super Eliminator (No Box) Sponsored by Chassis Engineering it is Sonny Freeland with a commanding lead of 93 points over John Taylor in second and 124 points over third place Richard Mortell. Freeland has dominated the 2015 season from the very first race where he took victory and is now poised to win the championship.

In Street Bike there has been a good fight all year among the top four riders. Clarence Goins, Randy Mackail, Rodney Pimetal, and Tom Ivy have all seen several finals throughout the year putting together consistent races every time they unload. Tom Ivy leads this group by 94 points over second with his 2 wins, 2 runner ups, and several quarter final appearances this year.

The championship battle in Jr. Dragster is a very close one with only 14 points separating first and second place. Amanda Foley leads with 416 points, followed by Jennifer Craft at 402 points, and Kyle Philhower at 352 points. Foley and Craft have traded the championship lead several times throughout the year. Keep an eye on this battle as it should prove to be very exciting season finale for the up and coming stars of drag racing.

In the Quick 16 classes the competition is undoubtedly the closest out of all classes competing. In Quick 16 Door Car only 73 points separate the top 21 drivers. Steve Hatfield leads the way with 91 points, followed by David O’Bryon at 82 and David Friedenberg at 80. This class has been dominated by Chevy power which is being used by 15 out the top 20 competitors. The battle in the Quick 16 Dragster tells almost the same story. Only 71 points separate the top 15 drivers. Johnny Tolisano leads the way with 101 points, followed by Claude Debonis with 82 points and Andrew Pearce at 71 points. Once a champion is crowned in both classes they would have definitely proved they should be at the top.

In addition to the championship battles, drivers will be vying for the final spots on Team PBIR which will compete in the Division 2 Team Finals in South Carolina in September.

Gates on Saturday open at 3 p.m. with timed runs beginning at approximately 5 p.m. The weekend gets started on Friday night with Test N Tune. Gates open at 6 p.m. with the track hot from 6:30-11 p.m. Admission is $20 to race for Test & Tune, $10 to watch either Friday or Saturday and children 12 and under are free.
