Can You Help Figure Out The History Of This Plymouth Duster Pro Stock Drag Car?

Can You Help Figure Out The History Of This Plymouth Duster Pro Stock Drag Car?

When we saw the ad on Craigslist, we first thought this bitchin old Plymouth Duster was for sale. But no! The guy who owns it is looking for information on its history. Why? Because he plans to do a restoration on this car and bring it back to it’s former drag racing glory. How bitchin is that?! So if you have any information on this particular car, and can give any insight to William, please call him at the number below. He is one of the good guys, as he’s trying to keep this Plymouth Duster alive rather than ruining it forever. Major kudos to William! I spoke to him last night on the phone, and he’s talked with A LOT of people about this car over the past two months since he got it.

He literally bought this car after hearing about it while attending his aunt’s funeral! The seller told him it was the first Pro Stock car to go over 144 mph, but he thought that was just some BS. Well now there are people talking about it really being a past Pro Stocker that may have run back in the day out here in NHRA Division 7. It was originally raced in here in SoCal and was picked up in Bakersfield by the previous owner, who bought the car because they wanted the magnesium Dana 60 that was in it. That is the only part that is not still in the car, but we’ve never even heard of one! Supposedly there was a 3 link and super stock leaf springs with sliders under it.

Undoubtedly it was later ran as a bracket car or something, but whatever the history it’s going to be a cool car when brought back to life. I can’t wait to find out what the deal is on this one, and if we can help William figure out the history then we’ll follow the restoration here on BangShift.com.

I’m commenting because I have seem at least one magnesium dana that was in a camero about 1980ish Pro Stock that had strut front end way back when. I believe they were used is Ditch Witch trenchers back in those days. Don’t know if they still make them or not. I guess I have a habit for running into rare things as I also owed a rare 4 bolt main 327 small journal short block back around 1975. Don’t remember the casting date but it must have been just before the 350 started production. Only one I have ever seen.

Almost positive the Sox and Martin team used the mag Dana 60 in the early pro stocks.

The magnesium Dana was a pretty rare and pricey item, but I have seen in in some early pro stocks for the real big teams. It wasn’t privateer stuff. If it had a leaf link with superstock springs, that again is early pro stock stuff. They were running ladder bars pretty quickly (i believe by 73′) so that car would have been built previous to that if it was a real pro stocker. If it was, the car was probably updated to a newer body style towards the end of its Pro stock career.

The lighter smaller cars were taking over by the mid 70’s.

The old 10,000rpm nitrous stickers are 70’s or early 80’s stuff also, so that dates the paint job.
