If you haven’t had an oil filter that you couldn’t remove, you’ve been one of the lucky ones. I’ve had a few that I thought were going to require cutting tools before they came off, and have cursed a variety of oil filter wrenches over the years. I prefer to just grab hold of the filter and remove it by hand, which should be pretty easy if the rubber gasket ring has been pre-lubed and installed correctly. But what if someone puts a big old kung fu grip on the oil filter and installs it as tight as humanly possible? Or what if they install it with a dry gasket?
