Rebeldryver’s Garage Drivetrain Swap: 4.10 Gears For the 1965 Impala SS’s 12 Bolt Differential.

After doing a close ratio 6-speed Magnum swap from American Powertrain in his 1965 Impala, Scott Liggett decided that the car could use more rear gear since it’s got so much overdrive, and I love him for it. He decided that the 3.73s just weren’t enough for the 1st gear ration in the Magnum either, so going to a 4.10 gear made sense on both ends. Considering the fact that most people freak at the thought of having a 4. anything rear gear in their street cars, I’m glad he did the right thing. With the .50 6th gear overdrive that is in the Magnum T-56, this thing will cruise in comfort at big highway speeds.

Video Description:

After the first time at the drag strip with the new combo of the BluePrint 400, American Powertrain T-5t6 Magnum 6 speed transmission, and the 12 bolt with 3.73 gears, the Impala didn’t perform well. It needed a steeper ring and pinion gear set to keep the engine in it’s power range. So, I made a call to Quick Performance, ordered up a 4.10 ring and pinion and a new bearing and shim set. Last weekend, my buddy, Chance borrowed a lift and got busy. This was my first attempt at changing a ring and pinion. I read about it a few times. Chance has done GM differentials a couple times. There was a lot of remembering, guessing, and just plain going for it.
