Tech Tip: How Much Fluid Should Your Automatic Transmission Really Have In It?

How much is too much? Or how much is too little? Is one worse than the other? The answers might surprise you and have to do with more than just the marks on your transmission dipstick. Of course, these tips here are intended to apply to drag racing and street strip vehicles, but the principles here will be good to know for any hot rodder putting their own project together.

Anyone who has put a new automatic transmission into a vehicle knows that there is sometimes a fine line between not working at all, and working like it should, when it comes to adding fluid to your transmission. Not enough makes for a poor shifting transmission that slips and doesn’t engage as it should. But putting in too much fluid makes your car puke fluid all over when it gets heated up. So what should you do?

Well the answer is going to be dependent on whether or not you have a transmission overflow or catch can, which you should, because it will matter in a really big way and is smart insurance for your ride.

    great information on an old question?? over size trans pan? smaller dia. high stall torque convertors, not a bad idea on using a catch can. at worst would keep trans tunnel free from oil slick , and maybe a source of fire

    So.. if dipsticks are that inaccurate, how do you know when you have enough of an overfill?
