Daddy Dave Speaks Out About Instant Green VS Flashlight Starts And VIN Numbers

Anyone who has seen Dave Comstock, aka Daddy Dave, on an episode of street outlaws or anywhere else knows that he’s a pretty outspoken kind of guy. He speaks his mind, but he rarely yells and screams to get his point across. I happen to know Dave well enough to have had some interesting conversations with him about different races and racing practices and agree with him on many of his gripes with the No Prep and Street Racing world we currently live in. In this video he and Wiley address Instant Green vs Flashlight starts and also the controversy around VIN numbers and steel roofs and quarters on cars running at No Prep or Street Race events.

Because his car features a real VIN number and steel roof and quarters, he is one of those who says that ALL competitors should have those items as well. Is he right? He might be, but I certainly know that not everyone agrees with him. And quite frankly I could be convinced of either argument, depending on what other rules are in place for a particular class.

With regards to Flashlight vs Instant Green, there is no doubt in my mind that the “Instant Green” currently being utilized by most No Prep races is neither Instant nor the right system to use. I’ll be getting into the specifics at a later date, but for now listen to Daddy Dave and see what he and Wiley think. Tell us if you agree or not and why.

Interesting discussion, rules (other then safety) for No-Prep? I don’t understand the fascination with running really fast cars on slick tracks putting your car and health in jeopardy. Some of these RvW races on prepped tracks are some of the BEST racing out there. I personally don’t like seeing cars crash. Imitating street racing, why? Racers should protect themselves and their stuff.

I don’t get the whole VIN argument. So what if you’ve got a steel roof and rear quarters. Just because you’ve hacked away everything but 1/8 the original car all of a sudden your car is more legit than a composite body car? Don’t think that argument holds any weight! You didn’t even save the firewall or floorpan. Big freaking deal if you saved a few parts. Obviously you can get a VIN for about anything. And if the car never sees street use what difference does it make whether or not it has a VIN?

As long as the body retains its stock dimensions, doesn’t matter if it’s steel, fiberglass, or carbon fiber.

My take on instant green is more accurate than any flashlight deal. Lot less BS about who jumped or not.

Interesting interview. I respect Dave Comstock as a legit racer and he certainly is entitled to his opinions. We all know there are a lot of opinions out there. I do find it ironic that an outlaw street racer who has carved out his racing carrier avoiding sanctioned tracks and their rules now feels that other outlaw racers should abide by a set of rules that HE thinks is right. If you want everyone to abide by a set of rules than build a car to fit those rules and go class racing at a sanctioned track where the rules are enforced. If you choose to be an outlaw/street/grudge racer than you are at the mercy of who ever is running that event. If you want an outlaw event to abide by your set of rules than you should organize and run your own event.

Drag racing has a lovely set of rules that have been worked out over a number of years, and allow a race to be a great test of who has the quicker car.

How about using a normal start with a tree, and depend on skills like cutting a light instead of playing rules lawyer?
