Few singular cars have had the impact on the sport of drag racing that the 1968 Hurst Hemi Dart and Barracudas did. When we look at the roots of today’s small tire racing and putting tons of horsepower down through a little contact patch these guys were on that program nearing 50 years ago. Outside of that, the cars are so iconic that they have their own class within the NHRA super stock structure and there are specialty shootouts all across the country every year featuring hemi Darts and Barracudas beating each other’s brains to the delight of crowds. The engine development that has gone into the modern versions of these cars is mind boggling. From their low 10-second performances in the 1960s we have machines that can run in the bottom level of the 8-second bracket now. Still naturally aspirated, still using the same carbs, but with much more advanced headwork, intake modifications, and superior transmissions, etc.

This particular car is awesome for a few reasons. For starters it has documented history. We know where it was, who was driving it and how fast it went. The car was a national record holder for a short time in 1968 which is cool. The car still has the original block in it which is way cool and certainly adds t the value and the car is painted up as it was during its glory days in the later 1960s. By now most of you know the stuff to look for when seeing these cars. The shape of the rear wheel openings, the straps to raise and lower the (essentially fake) side windows, the bucket seats from a van with lightweight brackets at their base, and on and on.

The 426 Hemi sits proudly in the engine bay of this car like it should. While we’re not sure we’d run straight to the strip with it after purchase, we would pow wow with the hemi guys that we know and go through the engine to make sure it is all up to snuff. Assuming that it we’d be at the strip trying to break the 10.15 national record that Terry Pringle set in this car during the 1968 campaign. If we really had some stones we would Steve Atwell the car and drive the sucker from end to end on Drag Week. Hey, Steve did it in his original car. Why couldn’t we?!

Big Money, nice car for a collector, if I had that kind of money (big do not) would rather have a modern clone race car

If I were the type of guy who could afford such things I would like to say I would buy it…without blinking…this is one of those bucket list cars but it’s that bucket list that you make knowing full well you will never see one let alone own one….Gotta be honest…I’m the type of guy who would run this car at nostalgia events…hell yeah…be able to share this history with like minded people and give them a chubby by running down the track….Oh to be rich….
