Carnage Video: Rear Engine Funny Car Backflip!

Carnage Video: Rear Engine Funny Car Backflip!

While rear-engine fuel dragsters took over the Top Fuel world in the 1970s, the rear-engine Funny Car never really made it off the launch pad. Yes there was mild success with them in the hands of guys like Jim Dunn, but for the most part, they were ill-handling wreck machines. This is some video proof of that.

If our drag racing geek skills are correct the video below was shot at the 1975 running of the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. The car, named Hindsight, was driven by a man named Dennie Geisler and was one of the few remaining rear-engine Funnies by this time.

At the hit of the throttle, the car hooked so hard that it actually launched nearly completely over backwards. The landing was bad, and, well, you’ll just have to watch the video and see for yourself.

(A little drag racing trivia. John Force’s first Funny Car was a rear engine, sidewinder style car that used a chain drive!)
