When it comes to stuff that we absolutely love around here, station wagons with manual transmissions are pretty high up on the freaking list. We always fawn over them and maybe that makes us dorks but many of you out there suffer the same addiction so go ahead and just skip this story if you don’t. Today’s hunk of eBay gold is a 440 big block powered 1963 Dodge 440 station wagon that is kind of rough and tumble in the sense that the “edges are frayed” if you know what we mean. There are some small dents, some rust, some missing trim, and the interior looks like a couple of bearcats fought it out, but we love this car just the same.
We would have dug this machine if it were equipped with a 383 and a Torqueflite but the fact that it has a freshly built 440 is huge. The 10:1 engine has some nice parts in it and we’re guessing it is the kind of torque making stump puller that really makes a street car fun to drive. The transmission is a four speed with overdrive so we’re wondering if it is one of the modified A-833 pieces that Chevy stuck in trucks or something else. Despite some steep rear gears it sound like the car can cruise the highway pretty well.
We dig the exhaust system with its dual cutouts and single large diameter pipe to the back of the car. That is kind of a sleeper touch although when the pipes are uncorked it likely sounds pretty nasty. We would not touch the exterior of this thing but we know most of you would. That’s a personal preference thing and we would not begrudge anyone who repainted and fixed up the body. We would redo the interior because it is pretty nasty and used up. It looks like fresh floors were recently put in the thing judging by the black paint on them.
This is one of those cars that has solid bones, a unique look, and all the potential in the world. We’re loving this thing!

For me this is a perfect combo of character & power – I wouldn’t a thing….except, maybe, that red seat bottom – but that’s nitpicking – the grand kids would love it!

The only thing I would change is a fresh tetanus shot before jumpin behind the wheel and destroying the hides….. Another pile of crusty goodness!!

If only it was 500 miles closer.
Only change 2 things, fresh interior(I like comfort while I’m shifting) and get rid of the cut outs. If you want loud, just build a race car.
