Craigslist Find: This 1971 Maverick Is What We Call A New Psuedo-Sleeper Style Of Car

Craigslist Find: This 1971 Maverick Is What We Call A New Psuedo-Sleeper Style Of Car

What the hell is a psuedo-sleeper you ask? Well, we think it is a car that has been modified to be faster than stock but isn’t ever really going to be “fast” in the traditional sense. Take this 1971 Maverick for example. Don’t get us wrong, the car is 100% BangShift approved but it isn’t ever going to be a strip blazer even though it has a turbo. See, that turbo is force feeding an inline six engine that is either 170, 200, or 250ci of displacement and they are starting with either 100. 115, or 145 hp so even with a bunch of boost you aren’t exactly going to end up with a car capable of wrecking the self esteem of muscle car owners. You will have a car that is super fun to drive and much more powerful than stock, but there aren’t going to be YouTube videos of you blowing a C7 away from a roll.

We’re 100% in favor of the psuedo-sleeper because it is a gateway drug. We all know how this deal works. A little horsepower is good, a lot more is better, and too much to actually control is just about right. This is the beginning of that process. So onto the car that’s for sale! This is a very clean 1971 Maverick and the turbo looks to be sufficiently unnamed, cheap, and wedged into its mounting location. The motor appears to be 100% bone stock outside of said turbo and the body is 100% stock as well. The car is rolling on pizza cutter width radials which will probably spin now as the engine is being force fed.

Would we buy this Maverick? Hell yes we would. Do we think it is some sort of head snapping sleeper from hell? No way and the seller isn’t presenting it that way. This IS a hot rod, though and we dig the heck out of it.

    * Krylon engine rebuild covering the wiring and hoses? CHECK
    * Booger welds on the turbo plumbing? CHECK
    * Radiator hose used for the pressure side plumbing? CHECK
    * Old air cleaner used to adapt the turbo to the carb causing a restriction? CHECK

    Yup, it’s Roadkill.

I have to wonder how well it works, based on the previous comments. Just slapping a turbo on something doesn’t guarantee more power, it might even make less. He certainly didn’t put much effort into it. Still, a rust free Maverick would sell for 3k easy around here.

Spray bomb rebuild including wiring and hoses. Yeah baby.

Why am I having flashbacks of what Scott Clark and Chad Reynolds did to the poor Maverick they got their hands on?

I always wanted to put a 351C in one of these. Up the road from us is a Stallion Maverick rotting away in a guys back yard.

You’re badly misinformed on the potential of the inline 6 – sure the US Ford log manifold 6’s are limited – but thats the reason why US owners import Australian Ford 250 X-Flows or the Alloy headed 6’s – very different beasts.
