Dick Landy’s Original 1964 Dodge 330 Lightweight Is For Sale On eBay – First AWB Chrysler, Lions Record Holder, First Funny Car?

If you have $375,000 burning a hole in your pants pocket you can own a legitimate and largely intact piece of drag racing history. Not only is this one of about 50 lightweight 1964 Dodges produced for high level racers across the country, not only is this the car Dick Landy used as a test bed for changing the wheelbase for better traction, not only does this car have a very early production hemi in it, not only is it considered by many to be the first funny car, but it has pretty much unquestionable history and only a couple of well documented past owners. This thing is the holy grail in many senses to the serious drag car collector. Legit history, not hacked to pieces, traceable past, it is all here.

Obviously Dick Landy was one of the great Mopar racers of his era and his era went right through the beginning of drag racing to the sport’s golden era in the 1960s and early 1970s (and beyond). This car was both an important part of his legacy and the legacy of Chrysler drag racing efforts at this time which in the middle 1960s took on a very serious bend when NASCAR banned the hemi for a brief time. With all of the money and resources pouring into the drags, cars like this were the result. Now, never one to let a good thing just be good, Landy began to mess with this car by setting it up so he could move the rear axle around. The idea was to see how that movement changed the car’s ability to grip, launch, and most importantly win races. The rudimentary suspension technology at the time, coupled with hard tires meant that racers looked for whatever they could to get an edge. The good news? This worked.

It worked so well that Chrysler actually produced altered wheelbase cars for their supported racers the following season. The car retains its forwarded shifted front and rear axle positions today, has the same paint job Dick Landy raced with and is generally flipping awesome. Featured in virtually every Mopar book and website you can think of and owned by the same guy for nearly 40 years, this is a masterpiece of awesome. The seller also claims that this car is the first race car to win a big sanctioned meet (in any discipline) with a factory line Hemi. Apparently the stuff run at Daytona was special run and these were factory blocks, so that’s another cool tip of the cap for this car. The car and the hemi both turn 50 this year. We’d say that they have aged pretty well for themselves.

So much want, so little money.

Anyone in need of a kidney? My first born? Left testicle?

It’s going to be interesting to see what this sells for since the Bill Flynn Yankee Peddler went for around 750K a few years ago at a Mecum auction.
