(Words and photos by Doug Gregory) – There’s one track not far from us that we hadn’t been to much over the last several years. It had seemed to be in decline and though there were moments of hope it seemed the track wasn’t drawing many fans or competitors. Last Fall we heard Scotty Richardson had taken the reins and was about to restore this track to its former glory and beyond. If you do not know who Scotty Richardson is then you need to go look up the top 50 drag racers in NHRA history.
So this was our first trip there with the track under new management. More lights, more paint, better drainage, and lots more. On the promotional side Scotty has partnered with lots of folks to bring in quality racing, sponsors, and entertaining events. The buzz about the track’s improvements and Scotty’s commitment to the racers and fans is bringing folks back that haven’t been in years and drawing many that had never been. In my opinion it can only get better from here.
I have three articles done up from a Ultimate 64 Challenge event that crammed two days of racing into one. I was so exhausted by about 8pm we just sat down and watched from the hill behind the starting line. Lots of cool stuff in this one. I dig Vegas and there were plenty to fill my plate. It was nice to see 1970 US Nationals winner Joe Lemley’s old Silver Bullet Nova (not the nova he won with in 1970) though it’s no longer sporting his trademark three pedals. We really liked the Blue mustang coupe with the timeless teardrop scoop, but every time it ran it seemed I was in the wrong place to get a shot. Can’t be everywhere.
Enjoy this group of grassroots sportsman racing and come back for more
