The Kalitta Motorsports DHL Funny Car team have come out swinging in the late season NHRA Countdown To One having scooped up two wins in the row at Charlotte and now St Louis. While the NHRA does not award style points for the way victories are had, they may want to think about it after seeing this video below. In it, Worsham narrowly defeats Matt Hagan and in the process blows his funny car up in a ferocious BOOM and ensuing flash fire. Being the veteran that he is, Worsham get the car stopped, jumps out, and steps away from the hulk quickly. Meanwhile, his crew is beating the stuffing out of each other in their traditional Kalitta Motorsports mosh pit and pig pile on the starting line.
Taking nothing away from other drivers on the tour, Del Worsham is a funny car driver. He knows the fire and explosion routine well and handled this one like a boss. Because all of the adventure took place after the finish line he was not in danger of a center line violation, etc. From his days of running as a young independant and traversing the country match racing to his CSK days, his national championship in top fuel at Al-Anabi, and what looks to be a championship charge now, Del Worsham has personified what it means to be a hard-nosed drag racer. Will be become the next on a short list of names that have won funny car and tip fuel titles? Time will tell but Del is the man to beat right now.
