eBay Find: Two Wheels, Two Tires, $5,000 Starting Bid – Scary Thing? They May Be Worth It

eBay Find: Two Wheels, Two Tires, $5,000 Starting Bid – Scary Thing? They May Be Worth It

I have not been trying to turn BangShift into eBay rare tire weekly but after finding the old Firestone Bonneville tires last week and not stumbling upon this pair of magnificent wheels/tires I figured I was once again obligated to tell you about these magical rubber hoops and their shiny centers.

The wheels you likely recognize as the relatively rare and highly prized Hurst mag wheels that the company produced between 1965 and 1969. George Hurst was obsessed with making sure that these wheels were safe so they used the outer hoops that Oldsmobile used on station wagon wheels and the center sections were forged aluminum made by Harvey. The two piece were fastened together with rivets and some sort of retaining plate. Essentially these things were designed to survive a direct nuclear hit. They were safe, they looked good, they were heavy as hell, and you better had been willing to pay for them because they were not cheap then and they certainly are not cheap not.

The tires are even more awesome, if that is possible. Those tires are Mickey Thompson redline cheater slicks that likely date from the middle 1960s. They have been so “gently” used that the center ridge from when the tires were molded is still present and some of the other surface markings left by the manufacturing process are there as well. Long story short? Those things have never even completed a burnout. While we’re not sure that we’d bolt them on and go out and try to set a national record, if you wanted to cruise locally on them we bet they are fine. Of course the Mickey Thompson tire company has gone on to great things in the worlds of drag racing and off-roading. It is yet another piece of the incredible legacy left behind by one of the most driven and successful hot rodding pioneers ever. These tires represent the equivalent of a Mickey Thompson 275 drag radial but from a half century ago.

Guys were just starting to figure out how important tire technology was for getting their cars down the track and like today, the advancements were coming hot and heavy. It is amazing that this stuff survived, but it did an if you have the money it could be yours!

Scroll and then hit the eBay link and Bid! You know you want ’em –

Someone like Coker needs to get these so they can make accurate reproductions, if they don’t offer these already.
