Edgewater Raceway Hot Rod Drags Coverage: Nostalgia Drags At One Of The Oldest Strips In The Country

Edgewater Raceway Hot Rod Drags Coverage: Nostalgia Drags At One Of The Oldest Strips In The Country

(Words and photos by Doug Gregoryt) – Our car hadn’t been on the North side of the Ohio river since we bought it early last year.  That changed this weekend.  Though it was raining when we left, the radar showed the liquid sunshine was staying south and West of the track just outside Cincinnati, OH adjacent to the Great Miami River.  Edgewater has been in operation since 1954 which makes it one of the older tracks still in existence and operating.

As per our typical mode, we arrived late.  There were several rows are cars in the car show area and I saw at least three rows of swap meet stuff waiting for us to peruse.  Cincy Street Rods hosts the event and the turnout was better than I expected in some respects and less in others.  Elimination rounds were due to begin right around the time the awards were handed out for the car show.  It seems almost on cue once the car show was over car started heading out the gate as the racing was getting underway.  Their loss.  While there was a good variety of nostalgic racers, old rods, and muscle cars present, there wasn’t a lot of anything.  What was there ended up being pretty interesting and most ran hard to put on a show.

The Lark-Ness Monster Stude was there along with the Big Iron ’56 Chevy.  These two are good for some wheels-up launches.  The Orange Peel Corvette was wowing with its old school looking blower sitting atop its 427 mill and true magnesium wheels.  A pair of mid-50s Chevy pickups looked innocent, but ran 11s in their ‘shaped like a brick’ glory.  We were intrigued with a burgundy Chevy II that was putting down consistent times in the high-14s with what sounded like a six-banger.  Sure enough, 292ci of screaming inline cylinders backed by a 4,000rpm stalled powerglide and 4.11 gears.  The driver said he could get more out of it, but it is more temperamental in that configuration.  Finally we had a lengthy discussion about the color of a mid-60s Chevy step-side.  Eventually my boys and I settled on ‘Honey Mustard’ as the appropriate shade for the orangish, yellowish, with a tinge of green hue.  We did manage to get some photos before the car show broke up and there was some good stuff to behold.  The swap meet did as swap meets do – we found something we had to have but weren’t looking for.  I snagged a pair of used, but excellent quality headers for our Nova to the tune of $40.

For the gearheads that don’t restrict their horsepower cravings to be satisfied with concrete or asphalt surfaces, the track is just a stone’s throw from IOK Fourwheelers’ Gravelrama site.

What a great event. That Green Model A is real clean and that white 71 Challenger makes me want to take it on a high speed chase across the desert
