Empire Dragway Nostalgia Gold Cup Coverage: Gassers, Funny Cars, and Door Slammers From The Historic NY Track

Empire Dragway Nostalgia Gold Cup Coverage: Gassers, Funny Cars, and Door Slammers From The Historic NY Track

(Mike Brooks) – Yesterday we ran our first of two Mike Brooks’ galleries from the Empire Dragway Nostalgia Gold Cup while was held in NY a weekend or two at the old school strip. The Gold Cup race was established as the track’s premier event in the 1970s and drew some of the biggest racers in the country at the time. The event trouped on for years before fading into the vapor of history. Four years ago, a group of racers and the track decided to revive the Gold Cup name and run the race in a nostalgia format to help honor the history of drag racing both at Empire Dragway and in the NY region. Competitors from all over New England, Canada, and other states showed up along with alcohol nostalgia funny cars and gassers a-plenty.

In this collection of photos, you’ll see awesome funny cars, gassers like Jim Oddy’s Junkyard Dog, and a host of others. Mike had a blast at the race all weekend long and his photos are fantastic. Hit the link below to take a walk down nostalgia drag racing lane at one of the neatest strips in the Northeastern quadrant of the country. Rumor has it that Empire has something like 3,000ft of shutdown area….that’s LOOOOONG!
