Fire Breathing Monsters: This Documentary Style Look At NHRA Drag Racing From RED Digital Cinema Is Awesome

Red Digital Cinema makes some insanely awesome cameras and equipment. Chad and I have seen the RED guys at different events this year like the pre-season PRO Winter Warm Up nitro testing session that we live broadcast from Florida and other places. The guys from RED were at the NHRA Winternationals in Pomona this year and that is where they filmed this really bitchin’ seven minute documentary called, “Fire Breathing Monsters” using high definition footage from the race and adding driver interviews about how they see themselves and the sport of drag racing, this is an extremely well done and cool looking film. We dare not call it a “video” because frankly, it is wayyy too high quality to demean it with that title.

With the NHRA tour rolling into Topeka this weekend after a wild and wooly event in Atlanta, all eyes will be trained on those “fire breathing monsters” as they take to the track tomorrow to start qualifying (weather permitting). What we dig about this film is that it isn’t the stock quotes you hear from race car drivers all the time. These interviews were done by people who knew the sport enough to probe deeper than the “so how does it feel to go 300?” questions. We get some insight into the personalities of the people involved and of course the camera work is among the best you will ever see when it comes to a drag racing film.

We’re not sure what higher praise we can give it other than to say that this is seven minutes VERY well spent if you are a drag racing fan. Heck, even if you are NOT a drag racing fan, this could give you some insight into why people love this sport so much and why the drivers participate, driving vehicles that can and do explode with impunity while traveling more than 300mph. Very, very good stuff here.

There’s a pile of words that I could use to describe that short video. All of them positive, a fair amount of them R rated. Need to show that to anybody that asks why I love drag racing…..right before they go see a top fuel session.

Red makes incredible cameras. Their resolution far surpasses 35mm film. Their Red One can capture at 4500×2160 resolution. The clarity of this video just shows how good Red equipment is. Commericals, Movies, Documentaries – all use Red.

Awesome video! Personally, the wheelstanding ’69 Camaro Stocker was the best part of the whole film.
