Gallery: The NHRA Hot Rod Reunion–Hot Rods, Nostalgia Drags and Burnouts at the Host Hotel!

(Words and photos by Tommy Lee Byrd) – Bangshift was in full force at the Holley National Hot Rod Reunion this past weekend, in Bowling Green, Kentucky. With Brian on the microphone, Chad manning the live feed and Charles Wickam shooting still photos, it was pretty much a wall-to-wall Bangshift weekend. But wait, there’s more! Tommy Lee Byrd stayed under the radar, but gave us yet another awesome gallery of photos from one of the greatest nostalgia drag racing events of the year.

TLB covered the car show, swap meet and a bit of drag racing here and there, including a shot of a super rusty Model A coupe doing one of the wildest wheelstands of the weekend. Then, our personal favorites come from the cruise in at the Host Hotel on Friday night. Hundreds of people lined the streets, as cars did burnouts and other scandalous activities leaving the parking lot. It was a good time, and the Bowling Green police must’ve been looking the other way because it went on for hours!

Check out TLB’s gallery of photos and be sure to check out all of the other coverage from the National Hot Rod Reunion!

Wally would not have approved of “burnouts and other scandalous activities” on the streets. Just sayin.

Uh Dennis, you not have been there. What Anonymous is talking about is what happened at the main hotel on Friday night. There were alot of people sitting on the street dividers and corners. They were also standing on the road. A maniac was doing donuts in the intersection, in what sounded like an overgrown weed whacker. We were surprised that the police did not show up. If just one person had lost control, it would have been a tragedy.

Hey Shawanda, I hope there are not any people sitting on the side of the road you are traveling on. The whole purpose of a dragstrip is to protect the partcipant as well as the spectators. Beech Bend was awesome, as well as the car shows at the hotel. I am sorry to say that I have attended many street races in my day. Twice, I have seen people mowed down by a vehicle. If you were at the hotel, you would have noticed that alot of drivers, experienced and not so experienced, were peer pressured into “squelling the tires”. I saw a inebriated man standing on the corner, holding his daughter, in front of him, asking a gentlemen and his wife to “smoke the tires”, in their 2008 Malibu, which was six inches from his daughter. Cars were awesome, owners were awesome, but the spectators need to be a little more aware of what a two ton hunk of steel could do to their little bodies.

We were at the host hotel and watched many of the smokey burnouts.
Dudes were definitely lighting them up.
John B Law was no where to be seen……..unlike last year when some
    folks got pulled over.

After going up to our room……..we could hear ’em till about 11:00 PM.
I swear one guy must’ve stood in it what seemed like forever.
I should’ve taken some photos of the tracks left the next morning.

We had a blast at the Hot Rod Reunion. It was a lot of fun seeing the guys lighting them up at the hotel. We would like to thank everyone at the event for their warm welcome. We look forward to going back out there next year.
