(Photos by Mike Brooks/Gasoline Images) – 13 years ago my wife and I drove from Massachusetts to attend the gasser reunion at Thompson Raceway Park in Thompson, Ohio a couple days after we graduated from college. It was the second one of those events that the track had held and we had a ball. There were a bunch of gasser luminaries there and it was a fun time with a drag strip jammed full of cool old race cars. The tradition that started nearly a decade and a half ago continues today and BangShift was there this year to see the event for ourselves. With cars coming in from all over the country and Canada, Mike Brooks tells us that he had a great time and enjoyed not only the drag strip but also cruising the pits to check out the cars and hear the stories from the owners.
The event has morphed from a straight “gasser only” affair to a gasser celebration and nostalgia race. The Thompson track is a fantastic venue for races like this because it has a great surface as well as a nostalgic feel that you just cannot reproduce at one of the big modern “mega-tracks” that dot the current landscape. The crossover bridge, small race control room, sunken race track, and green surroundings are all perfect when looking back at the history of straight line competition.
This first group of photos will focus on the cool cars that Mike Brooks shot in the pits. We’ll move to the strip with action tomorrow. Like the time before a prize fight, let your fingers do the walking as you size up the competition that was bristling and ready to run at Thompson!
SWEET!
