Gassers! A Look At The Hellacious, Tiny, Wild, And Iconically Cool English Bodied Machines At Bowling Green

Gassers! A Look At The Hellacious, Tiny, Wild, And Iconically Cool English Bodied Machines At Bowling Green

(Words and photos by Doug Gregory) – This gallery is devoted to the Anglia and the Austin – two of the most-prominent examples of gasser-style builds for decades.  Their small size and light weight make them very quick with even a mild engine.  Their biggest drawback seems to be the short wheelbase, but that is true regardless if the car is short.  If one is brave enough to shoehorn a big-block or a blower you’ll be rewarded with one seriously-quick door-slammer.   We’ve gathered these imports together because they just didn’t really fit any other place and I’m trying to keep the galleries to a manageable size.  Enjoy these cool rides.

    Wow!

After the second picture of what you call an Anglia my eyes started closing!

I saw a picture of a critically cool Morris Minor on these pages recently – it mustn’t have turned up – and where was the Pro Street Austin/Nash Metropolitan?

I’m not really being picky – after most small English cars of that era were not exported to the States – more’s the pity!

Gordie – I thought we were getting along. From now on I’ll just sit on my British car photos and not submit them. As for the other guys – I’ve got to categorize my photos in some manner and this is how I broke them out into useable galleries. I did not get a picture of a Thames, Morris, MG, etc. I called my gallery ‘English’ because the emblem on the Austin. No reason other than that. I won’t make the mistake of having a gallery of just British cars again. More Camaros……that’s what we need…..more Camaros.

I didn’t know Camaros were made in England – but we DO have a modicum of taste after all dear chap!

I like this gallery, thanks for sharing it Doug!
There’s something about small British cars turned Gasser that’s just thrilling.
My folks’ mechanic had received a second-gen Anglia (the really ugly one) from a customer, and I almost bought it sight-unseen while picking up Mom’s F-150. A junkyard 351W, a decent-enough C2 and it would’ve been a blast on the strip!
