IHRA Summit Sportsman Spectacular Season Opener Delayed – Drag Strip Construction On-Going

IHRA Summit Sportsman Spectacular Season Opener Delayed – Drag Strip Construction On-Going

Well this is not the start that the planners of the IHRA Summit Sportsman Spectacular series had in mind. It has been announced that the first the of the year has been rescheduled from March 9-11 to June 1-3 because the track it was to be held at has not been fully constructed yet. Xtreme Raceway Park has been dealing with weather related delays that have slowed construction progress and caused this change.

The IHRA kind of has a history of this stuff. There have been multiple occasions over the years where schedules were released for events at tracks which had not yet been built and the end result was typically worse than a delay. That being said, this place is mostly built and is not a project that only exists in someone’s mind or on paper. It is a real place and it will be done.

The IHRA will race on March 9-11, still. Instead of Texas it will be North Carolina as the series hits Farmington Dragway. We’ll keep you posted on any developments.

Weather-Related Construction Delays Postpone IHRA Xtreme Raceway Park Opener

Summit Sportsman Spectacular Texas Event Rescheduled for June 1-3

West Palm Beach, Fla. – The International Hot Rod Association and Xtreme Raceway Park have postponed the March 9-11 Summit Sportsman Spectacular race until June 1-3 due to weather-related construction delays at the new Ferris, Texas track.
Unseasonably cold weather at the first of the year and heavy rains last week have pushed back construction projects where the facility simply isn’t going to be ready at that time to host such a large-scale event.
“The weather has caused several delays in construction. Although the facility is close to being finished, it is important we run some test-n-tunes first to make sure that everything is working properly before hosting such a large event,” Xtreme Raceway Park General Manager Gaylen Smith said. “We are committed to providing a great experience for the racers and we look forward to welcoming them to our track in June.”
“It’s unfortunate that we have to make this tough decision, but we have to give the construction crews and staff at Xtreme Raceway Park the proper time to complete the projects to host their first major event,” IHRA division director Frank Kohutek said. “They are building one of the nicest drag racing venues in the country with plenty of safety features and modern amenities to provide the best possible experience for our racers. We look forward to racing there in June with our IHRA Summit Sportsman Spectacular event.”
All pre-entries for the original March 9-11 Xtreme Raceway Park dates will be honored for the new dates. Racers can now register until May 21 to take advantage of an offer to buy entry into Saturday’s race and get free entry for Sunday’s race.
The IHRA Summit Sportsman Spectacular kicks off at Farmington Dragway, Mocksville, N.C., March 9-11, 2018.
