Oh No COPO: Jesse Alexandra’s Wild Ride After The Finish Line In Topeka Was Scary To Watch

If there is one thing that I tell aspiring announcers looking for advice it’s, “look out the window”. Seriously, the most basic advice you can give. Some guys gets all transfixed on the computer screen in their announcer booth or they get caught up in other stuff and miss incidents like the one you will see below. Credit where it’s due, Joe Castello on the NHRA announcing staff had his eyes up and his concentration on when this rather bizarre incident happened during the running of the SamTech.edu Factory Stock Showdown in Topeka.

As Jesse Alexandra proceeded down the track, his COPO seemed to lose power at mid-track and Archie Kohn in the other lane powered down the course. Then, Alexandra’s car charged through the lights at full tilt. We’re not sure why that happened but the car was going about 110 in the Eighth and it passed the finish line around 150mph.That’s when things got bad.

We do not know the cause of the situation but Alexandra’s car rotated sideways and piled hard into the left side wall of the strip. Like Jeremy Ray, Alexandra walked away from the incident but like Jeremy Ray, he had a severely demolished car. We’re not sure if the car was accidentally downshifted if too much brake was applied, or what but this was a tough way to see Alexandra’s COPO exploits thwarted.

We believe the car will be repaired and see competition again.
