Icon For Sale: The Late Ken Nelson’s Cool Bus Fun System Wheelstander Is For Sale – Whole Operation

One of the greatest drag racing exhibition vehicles of all time is for sale along with all the stuff you need to operate it. The late Ken Nelson’s Cool Bus Fun System wheelstander has been seen by millions of people over the years at drag strips, air shows, and wherever else he plied the trade of driving a unique vehicle that he built with his own two hands. I remember seeing this thing as a kid and then having the fun of actually announcing Nelson at New England Dragway and then at IHRA national events all over North America. It’s a lumbering, audacious thing that people loved largely because it was a lumbering audacious thing. The glory of the Cool Bus (to me, anyway) is the fact that once it comes off the line and the groaning big block has got the thing on its haunches, there’s this collection “no freaking way does it make it to the end” feeling that people get. Then it does in fact make it to the end and the crowds would go crazy.

The driving position is center mass in this vehicle and Nelson would often place a dummy up front where the regular driver would be. It added to the show. Why is it is “fun system”? No freaking clue to be honest but I never really cared to ask Ken when I saw him at the races anyway. The operation comes with the wheel sander the hauler/toter home, and an enclosed trailer. The asking price for the whole shooting match is $185,000. When you consider what you are getting is a functional business and all the assets to operate it, we think the price is fair.

There are not a lot of wheelstanders out there anymore. A motivated buyer could hustle and make a living with this thing, pay off the $185k in relatively short order and become a wheel standing pilot to the masses. The impression this beast left on me as a kid was one of many that built my love for drag racing.

Someone needs to be that to the kids of today.

Love this! I’ve seen this many times and it’s a great as it was the first time.
I agree, someone should buy this and keep it going.

Hope somebody keeps this going! I have a picture of me from when I was probably 5 standing by this thing in Norwalk. This and Bob Motz’s truck are truly staples of my childhood going to the Night of fire in Norwalk every year. Seen Motz a lot lately and I still get just as excited as I did when I was 5.
