When the last race had been run, when Vinny DiMino pulled into the Winner’s Circle to get the big check, and once the crews had wrapped up the last of the celebrations of the 2019 Spring Fling Million, it was time to start recovering. Chad and I turned our mobile live-streaming station back into your average, ordinary, everyday scissor lift. We packed up the kit box, I went to the hotel and Chad hit the road back home for a couple of days of down time. Five solid days of racing at a nearly 18-hour a day pace will take it out of you. How do I know? On the flight from Las Vegas back to Nashville, I wound up sitting next to one of the racers (my apologies for not getting your name, man!) and within a couple of minutes of sitting down, he noticed that I was doing any and everything to find a comfortable way to sleep on a newer Boeing 737. At some point in the three-hour flight back home myself, himself and his companion were at some point or another comatose. I don’t sleep on airplanes…but I sure knocked the hell out on that flight!
The Spring Fling Million is one of the more grueling events we cover when you take the amount of cars and amount of live coverage time into consideration. But this year, Chad and I had a blast. We broke up the live-streaming camera duty so that we could take a break, cool off, stretch our legs, and get charged back up for another shift. We both shared photog duties. We were cheering on drivers we knew, making bets on the races as they wound down to the quarters, semi-finals and finals. We were having a ball, even though we were working our asses off. We love the Spring Fling Million, and we are looking forward to next year’s event!
