(Photos by Wes Allison) – We’re still recovering from our near week-long stint at Donald Long’s Lights Out 12: Playing With Power. This event, much like many that have preceded it was marked by record setting performances, incredible side by side action on race day, and more people than anyone has seen at a drag race since the last one of these monsters in February 2020.
Lights Out has a unique format. The racers have their first qualifying session on Wednesday evening. This is after they have tested all day on Tuesday and most of Wednesday. Then on Thursday, the same process is repeated. A day of testing and then qualifying that night. On Friday, it is a full day of qualifying, and then on Saturday there’s a final qualifier for those categories that have a bump spot, and the first round of eliminations are run. By Sunday, everyone in the joint is ready to get their race on and it’s over by Sunday evening. The days are long but the action is incredible.
In this gallery you are going to see photos of cars with small tires, big tires, slicks, and radials. The slick cars run in 6.0 index and open comp and those big rollers help to put some fresh rubber onto the track. Oddly, every great radial race also has some slick tire categories to help keep the track in tune.
Enjoy these photos, we’ll be back with more tomorrow!
