Like most things in hot rodding, Bobby Underwood’s Lincoln did not fall from the sky fully built one day and start ripping off 9-second elapsed times at the drag strip. The car that we ran across at Royal Purple Raceway in Baytown, Texas has been in a mechanical evolution of sorts for years with ever more powerful engines occupying the front of the car. There have been N/A modular engines, boosted modular engines, and the Coyote engine which is in the car now and braced up with a pair of turbos initially lived as a naturally aspirated piece before being fitting with the tall Boss 302 intake manifold and those 62mm boost makers that live in there now.
This car is no flyweight as it had a shipping weight of just under 3,800lbs from the factory. Yes, the Coyote engine is lighter than what it replaced but when you add the turbos, plumbing, roll cage, and other stuff we bet that this thing is all of 31-3200lbs when Underwood rolls it up to the starting line. Having been through so many combos under the hood and under the car it is no surprise that Underwood has the traction situation handled and is now working on making the most power out of the turbocharged Coyote setup as he can. A street legal Lincoln ripping off high nine second passes is awesome.
I was a senior in high school when these cars came out and we were all freaking about the fact that they had the DOHC modular engine in them and that they were making 300+ horsepower. It was a big deal and these were among the coolest cars on the road of that late 1990s era. Glad to see a guy who caught the bug and it never left his system!
Here’s what Jacob had to say:
Although we love all quick cars here at Bangshift, it’s nice when we run across a build we’ve never seen anyone attempt before. So when we found Bobby Underwood’s 1998 Lincoln Mark VIII in a sea of Mustangs and Camaros we were blown away. The car is powered by an e85 chugging twin turbo Coyote that moves the same style Lincoln your grandma drove to church down the track in less than ten seconds! With a best pass so far of 9.79 at 140 miles per hour, and a murdered out appearance, this Lincoln has come a long way from its original life as a Sunday driver!

As a fan of the Lincoln MkVIII, this car makes me very happy. Is he still running the factory IRS?
Seeing as how he is running in the 9s … I kind of doubt it … but then again … who knows … maybe he found a way around IRSs limitations when it comes to the 1/4 mile . Hmmmn .
Still has IRS
Looks like a fun ride
I’ve been wondering how a Coyote would fit in those for a while. Looks like a tighter fit than I’d expected.
That’s incredible!
I have the weirdest boner…
Killer … puts it quite nicely ! Any chance though this beast could be called upon to wreak a little Doom upon that travesty of a Bentley posing as a Lincoln at the NYC auto show ?
Hell … Id even pony up for the gas if it did !
Apologies folks … that joke of a Lincoln Continental thing has really gotten up my nose ! 😉
Looks like a well engineered Lincoln, I have respect for someone that would build something other than the usual drag car, most likely using a Ford 9″ instead of the OEM IRS ColoradoKid.
Nice !!!! Pretty wild ride. I bet the owner makes love to it every night.
Those tailpipes do look to have some rub marks inside them
Lol
As the founder of the Lincoln Mark VIII Enthusiast Community, it’s an honor & a privilege to see Bobby’s beast ripping the asphalt. This is one BAAAAD Lincoln!
Bobby has a moldy built IRS with stock half shafts and air bag in rear springs. 1.50 60ft so far leaving on very little boost on footbrake.
My 94 Mark has made 660 rwhp , i havent track tested it yet , i am really interested in your experiences setting it up for the track.
Are you on Mark viii. Org or Modularfords.com ?
