The start of the 1993 NHRA season began like so many others have, at Pomona, California for the Winternationals. In this video we’ll watch the final rounds, which were broadcast LIVE on TNN for the world to see. Now, what is really interesting here is the fact that the ONLY thing that was seemingly broadcast on TNN from this race were a pre-race show and the final rounds. Pretty interesting. Bob Frey, Brock Yates, and Steve Evans are the three guys you will see and hear during this show.
The craziest final round of the the weekend was top fuel. Joe Amato and Kenny Bernstein squared off and as you can see from the lead photo here, Bernstein’s run did not end well. The engine started leaking, got the car sideways and then when the thing blew up it cut the slicks off of it at speed and sent him flying across the track and ultimately into the steel guardrail that lined the shutdown area. He was OK but as you will see, his bell was rung HARD. Evans plants a mic in his face and Bernstein still has the little birdies flying around his head like in the cartoons. He attempts to make some sort of a NASCAR reference but it just does not sound right.
The funny car final is cool because if you remember, 1992 was the season that John Force lost after winning a string of championships. Cruz Pedregon took the title that year and Force’s aim was to recapture the top spot in the category. I think we all know what happened during that quest.
As the sportsman and pros race at Pomona today you should watch this video from 25 years ago!
