This weekend, Mark Oswald will be crew chiefing the Matco U.S. Army top fuel dragster of Antron Brown but in 1990 he was a kid driving the Ford Motorcraft nitro funny cars and doing a fine job of it. That being said, he had one hell of a bad ride in the first round of eliminations against Al Hoffman at the race held at the Texas Motorplex that year. People talk about nitro burning engines being some types of even more harebrained thing in 2018 than they were nearly 30 years ago. They blew up then as well, and in spectacular fashion, as you’re about to see.
I can remember watching this as a 10-year old kid and freaking out because of how violent it was and how the body was just immediately vaporized like it had never been on the car in the first place. Oswald’s major problems came post crash when he could not see out of his oil soaked visor and the car pinballed off the walls of the place.
Oswald had an awesome career as a driver and his stint as a crew chief has been pretty fruitful as well. He loves the sport and any man than would get back into a car after watching this, clearly does! We’re wondering if any fans still have pieces of the body.
