(Photos by Mark Rebilas) – I have the good fortune to see Mark Rebilas on more weekends than I don’t between the months of March and November. While Mark shoots all kinds of stuff like the Super Bowl, NBA, MLB, and virtually every other big time sporting endeavor you can think of his first love and big passion is the world of drag racing. That’s where he got his start. Back when he was 11 Rebilas captured a photo of Gary Ormsby suffering a massive blow over during a pre-season test session in Arizona and after it was published in National Dragster and then Motor Trend, his star was launched. Mark served in the United States Navy where he was able to really hone his craft and once he left the Navy he went full bore into the world of professional photography and we have all been the richer for it.
He knows how to be in the right place for other people’s wrong times and when he’s there he does not miss an opportunity. The Larry Dixon sequence that you’ll see is one of the most astounding things every caught on a drag strip and that’s just one example of a myriad of awesome photos that you’ll see in this collection at the link. If you do not already follow Mark’s blog you should. He throws up great stuff from the events that he shoots. You know the cast offs that places like Sports Illustrated and USA Today don’t want.
Mark’s work kicks some serious ass and we’re happy to say that none of the drivers you’ll see in the images at the link suffered major injuries from these calamities. Even Larry Dixon emerged from his car under his own power in the most improbable ending any of us could have imagined.
Phenomenal. And thank you for posting exposure info, it helps hacks like me improve my photography.
