The Minivan: The Axle-Eating, Turbo-Popping Drag Week Bucket Of Fun!

There is a contingent of turbocharged, front-driver Mopar types that have been growing within the Drag Week ranks for a couple of years now. Cars like Shelby Omnis, Daytonas and the like putting down boosted power and making the full week are cool, but watching a clapped out, couple hundred dollar minivan doing the same things as an Omni GLH is just that much better, especially when it’s filled with a bunch of good ol’ boys from Kentucky who seem to be having more fun than most people running the strip (“fun” if you include changing a drive axle every third blink because you forgot to order custom units designed to handle such abuses, “Free Candy” jokes, and other such hijinks.)

Dodge actually did make five-speed Caravans in the first two generations, but this gray brick has been converted with a four-banger raided from a Chrysler LeBaron, a five-speed from a Dodge Daytona, and drive axles from just about anywhere in the midwest that had them, Chrysler remanufactured units or those of dubious quality. And it’s legitimately fast, too…the last day all cares went out the window in the name of a personal best time. And Kyle from 1320Video nails the humor that this team brought to Drag Week perfectly. I’ve had a bunch of turbo fwd Mopars and the are a blast, beat up lots of STOCK 5.0 Mustangs and IROCs with just a Mopar Performance ecu.
