The long running facility has an eighth mile drag strip and a 5/8-mile oval track. To be brutally honest, the place isn’t exactly going to be holding the US Nationals next week but it is a serviceable track that would clean up/spruce up nicely with some investment. There’s a big city around the corner and plenty of population to entice. We’ve never attended a race at the oval track but we have stopped in and hung out at the strip. Why? Well basically because it is mere yards from Interstate 90, a massive east to west highway that runs perpendicular to the joint. It is kind of jarring the first time you see the place because you’ll just be minding your own business and then BAM…drag strip next to the highway!
The place sits on a total of 77 acres and the current asking price is 2.3-million dollars. That’s a lot of test and tune night tickets and at that price we’re nervous that the place will be scarfed up by a developer and that will be the end of the strip that has been open since 1960! That’s right, the strip has been functioning for 54 years and now could be lost and gone forever unless the right person steps up and makes an offer that the current sellers cannot refuse. We’re not ignoring the circle track business and we’re sure that the circle track guys care about that thing as much as we do about the strip but we’re drag racers around here, so forgive our ignorance.

Just curious . How long has this place been for sale officially ?
Lancaster opened in ’59, not ’60. I worked there in ’73, ’74, ’76, ’88, ’89 and ’90 in a variety of positions, including Public Relations Director. I wrote a book about the track, “Lancaster Heroes,” in 2005. I grew up there and would hate to see it go but it has been in serial financial trouble (mostly because of fly-by-night “promoters” who sucked money out and never put anything but the barest minimums back in) since it was bankrupt and auctioned off in 1980. This place is in serious need of expensive many repairs.
