Officially Undead! Heartland Park Topeka Announces Weekly Racing Program

Yes, we know that the sprawling Heartland Park Topeka facility was technically saved when it came under new ownership a couple of months ago but the reality is that with the announcement of weekly racing activities, it is official. There are some huge and beautiful tracks across the country that exist only for major events. The lack of a weekly racing series for sportsman competitors with test and tune nights during the week means that this is officially a living part of the Topeka gearhead community again. We’re super happy to see this news because the place is so mammoth and so cool it needs management who will actually do the work to make these programs successful. As far as we know the place has never had a functioning weekly series and has existed only on major events.

The dirt track that’s on the grounds will also run weekly action as well. We can share some inside baseball about last year’s NHRA national event because we were there and behind the scenes. The track had not been used since October or November and the NHRA basically got the keys from the city a couple weeks ahead of the event and send teams of people there to get the facility back into some sort of operating shape. It was a mess. There was wiring that had been torn out, the tower was in shambles, and the whole place was like a ghost town. Prepping the track was the least of their worries. The place is bad ass fast and now more and more of the residents at Topeka will be able to find out with their own street cars and race cars.

Since the facility opened in 1989, there has NEVER been any type of weekly program. I was the track announcer from opening day till the late 90’s and always thought such a great facility was going to such a waste. Bill Kentling & Paul Cartright were the only 2 managers (in my opinion) that ever really tried to get HPT to become what was possible, but between the city and the track operators, it just never really happened despite some valiant efforts. With new PRIVATE ownership & Todd Stephens managing, this should become a shining star in the heart of America for racing. Looking forward to many more years of competiton on the south side of Topeka.

Bob thank you for the confidence in our team to make HPT one of the best motorsports venues in the country. I agree with you about Paul he wasn’t given the opportunity or time to turn the facility around.
