A Peek Inside Customs By Bigun – The North Carolina Shop Does Everything From Gassers To Small Tire Killers

A Peek Inside Customs By Bigun – The North Carolina Shop Does Everything From Gassers To Small Tire Killers

So I got into town basically a full day early before the NHRA Four Wide Nationals in Charlotte. Knowing that I was going to have some free time, I hooked up with Eric Yost for a day of fun and gearhead stuff, which I have been telling you about this week. From racing big rigs in the woods to Freightliner burnouts, an evening at Mooresville Dragway, and cruising his deuce and a half around, it was an awesome day. There’s one element I hadn’t showed you yet and this is it, the thing that keeps Eric Yost busy for about 23 hours a day and (mostly) out of trouble, his shop Customs by Bigun. This humble building (which is ever expanding) has turned out some of the neatest cars in the land. THE Kevin Mullins’ 4,000hp Mustang? Yost and the boys had a big hand in that one. The famous Dirty Bird that won both its class at Drag Week and the Hot Rod Magazine Top Speed Challenge? It was born here as well.

When we stopped by the shop there were customer projects left, right, and center. There was also equipment being delivered like a hydraulic tubing bender which was the toy du jour when we got back to the building in the afternoon and saw that it was sitting outside the doors, virtually begging to be played with. Yost’s history along with his brother who is at the shop as well is deeply rooted in the Mooresville stock car culture. Both guys worked for NASCAR teams for years in roles ranging from management to fabrication. The fabrication skills developed for years on those top shelf teams are now applied at the Customs by Bigun shop with great success.

Rather than just blather on about the guys and the place, let’s look at some of the projects in the shop and it’ll give you an idea of exactly what these guys are up to and how hard they are thrashing to keep up.

The Mustang on the bottom of this pig pile was in for a standard roll cage, carpet job, and wiring work. Yost and the guys will take on everything from relatively mundane work like this to full tilt projects like you will see a few photos down. The Camaro has a turbocharged LT style (the 1990s LT style) engine in it that makes huge power and has 275s on it.

Here’s a house project car that will be used as a tow rig…seriously. This Chevy has a Crown Victoria front suspension under it, an LS engine in it, and will be on air. Yost plans to basically clear over what you see here as far as paint goes. Imagine this rig heading down the highway with a trailer behind it. Awesome, right?

Here’s the LS and the Crown Vic suspension in the front of the old Chevy. Still a bunch of work left to do here.

This one is an interesting case. We were kind of beating around the bush about its presence at the shop until we saw the LS with twins on it, the parachute hanging off the back, and the fact that it looks outwardly stock outside of the ‘chute. Yost says that this car still has IRS in the back….not for long we bet.

This nice shoebox Nova will be done in a pro touring style. Yost actually has his personal Camaro on a table getting a pro touring style makeover. These guys can do it all.

This Corvette was in for a 25.5 SFI Cage and that’s no small feat inside the cramped quarters of these cars. Doing a cage in this type of car takes a lot of skill because bending and fitting all the bars tightly is imperative so the driver can actually fit inside of and drive the thing.

We didn’t ask when the end power plant will be for the Corvette but let’s just take a wild ass guess and say that turbochargers will likely be involved.

One of the neatest projects in the shop is this 1939 Studebaker coupe being built as a traditional gasser to run with Quain Stott’s series. The rules are tight on these cars and the thing essentially has to be built to 1960s standards with regard to chassis and drivetrain. The body was pulled from a field and it will be AWESOME when done.

It already looks great with the magnesium Halibrands out back just mocked up. Those tires are a little on the large-ish side but they are just there for fitment purposes.

Here’s a frontal shot of the Ford/Chevy odd couple on the lift.

This Jeep was pegging our want meter. It can be yours for $3,500. Fresh small block Chevy engine, little to no rot, clean as a whistle. I wanted to jump in and drive the thing home. Want it? I’ll get you in touch.

Eric has expanded the shop and the walkway leading to the new area had this big wall and his wife decided to dress it up with 15 years worth of decals. There’s nary an inch left of open space and this is a BIG wall!

Both of these cars were in the new section of the shop. We’d likely be killed if we said anything about the truck on the shop floor and we may as well stay mum on the Camaro as well. The big dollar grudge scene is VERY busy in the Carolinas. If you see either of these two trying to choose off with you…run away like your hair is on fire unless you hate money.

Sure they’ve tried out some different turbo combos over the years. What? You don’t have a turbo collection at your home or shop? We think these were mating and multiplying. There may be eight in that same spot now.

big gun customs017

Here’s the new metal working area at the shop and it’ll get plenty of use as there’s a near unending stream of customer work being completed, started, arriving, and in flux. Eric Yost has built himself one heck of a reputation at Customs by Bigun and because of that we think you’ll be hearing his name a whole bunch for years to come. We’ll keep you updated on these projects and more as they come through the shop. Thanks to Eric and the boys for showing me around town for the day. We had a riot and did a ton of fun stuff. These guys talk the talk AND walk the walk and it is always neat to see true craftsmen at work.

    Nice tour.

Met Eric on DW few years ago. His crew work there a$$es off, but have fun doing it.
