Sell Out: 2015 Hot Rod Magazine Drag Week Fills Up In 16 Minutes! From Top To Bottom, This Should Be Great

Like fat kids chasing an ice cream truck, fervent Hot Rod Magazine Drag Week hopefuls would not be denied entry into an event that has literally taken on a life of its own over the last few years. It took less than 20 minutes to sell out the 350 available spots for the race and create a massive waiting list of people who are wanting a chance to get in. On top of that, there are a growing number of people who are planning on showing up at the race with cash in hand trying to get in on registration day if any spots become available. All of this adds to the already dramatic nature of the event that pits the fastest and quickest street legal drag cars in the world against each other at multiple strips over a given week of driving and drag racing  competition. It is one of the most fun, torturous, hateful, exciting, and draining experiences that you can have with an automobile and it seemingly tops itself every single year.

The list of “heavy iron” is impressive with the cast of characters that you’d expect to be on it but the plot twists this year are the fact that Jeff Lutz, fresh off the 2015 championship has registered for competition after a leading lots of us to believe that he was going to hang up his DW spurs upon earning his title in 2014. Will Lutz show up in one of his familiar 1957 Chevrolets? Is there “plan x” in the works? We’ve heard whispers of it going both ways there. Larson is registered in his S10 truck, Tom Bailey is having his new and potentially record setting Camaro completed, and then there are the people who we haven not heard much about, so as usual, it’ll come down to a battle of survival, attrition, and the will to survive by the end of the week.

There have also been a raft of new rules added for 2015 that are aimed at keeping people’s efforts on the up and up. Daily impound for the really fast cars that actually sets up a controlled environment where things can be seen/monitored with regard to who is working with what could play a role in the success or failure of the most labor intensive cars competing. Trailer sizes were redefined for 2015, the daily driver class is now known as Street Machine Eliminator and the quickest allowed et has been dropped to 10.0. The Ultimate Iron class is going to be awesome. This is a category designed to give the cars that really got this event off the ground a dedicated place to compete. Steel bodied machines like Joe Barry’s 1955 Chevy, Lutz’s original 1957 Chevy, etc. That is going to be great.

At this point the only thing we’re annoyed with is the fact that we have to wait until September to get to the race!
