Diesel Video: Ripping Gears And (Nearly) Beating A Mustang In A Diesel Ram

This week’s American Powertrain Parting Shift is one of the most fun ones that we have ever posted. We find ourselves in the cab of a 2002 Dodge Ram truck that is equipped with a Cummins diesel and a six-speed manual transmission. The driver and a co-pilot at at the end of the staging lanes waiting to round the corner at Mo-Kan Dragway in Missouri when the video begins and then we see them round the corner to the track. The driver shifts the truck in what looks like four wheel drive when he leans down and yanks a lever in font of the seat.

He leaves the starting line in second gear and deftly plows his way through third, fourth, and fifth before taking a couple swipes at sixth. That extra time in making the final shift literally bit him in the end as the car in the other lane, a Fox-bodied Mustang actually catches them right at the stripe. The reaction of the guy pulling himself up on the wheel and then the two guys both basically exclaiming “DOH!” as the Ford sneaks by is funny.

Outside of the sixth gear issue (which may be more due to the fact that the trans has been beaten like a rented mule than anything else) the guy was lightning quick with the long throws. We believe the transmission in this truck would be an NV5600 and as you can tell, the thing really takes a beating. Just watching the violence of each gear change is enough to make us wince.

There’s big fun to be had on test and tune days like this one. These guys had a blast and we’re sure the thrill of the guy in the other lane was pretty big as well because there’s nothing like winning a close race like that. Just when you get to the eight mile you start to wonder if you’ll catch your opponent and he did. American Powertrain Parting Shift gold!
