Last weekend at Indy the E3 Spark Plugs pro mod category provided some of the most incredible action of the entire event. There were upsets, there were notable non-qualifiers, and there were loads of people in the stands who saw Stevie Fast Jackson come from literally nowhere to win the event. Pro Mod has been a part of the US Nationals for more than a decade now and the cars just continue to get quicker and faster. Back in 2004, the cars were barely starting to touch the 6-teen zone, which is where loads of top sportsman cars are dialing in these days. While it seems quaint, the numbers that these cars were running had the world captivated and as you’ll see, there were the same power adder rivalries that exist today…before the turbos.
Notable names here are people like Richie Stevens, Harold Martin, Jim Oddy, and Mike Castellana. The fact remains that these cars were doing stuff that no one expected on a track that was north of 130 degrees. In 10-years with advancements in chassis and horsepower making technology the cars are running about three 10th quicker in the same conditions. Were these cars any less entertaining? We’d argue that they were as fun to watch as the cars are today.
Bret Kepner, Ted Jones, and Kenny Nowling bring us the action from this race and it was a really fun affair. The 50th anniversary addition of the The Nationals and a group of drivers filled with legendary names. Fun stuff.
