This is a great video. Hagerty has done a series of time lapse engine rebuilds that we’ve loved. There have been small blocks, VW engines, and other iconic power plants but this one takes the cake. These guys got the green light to show up at DSR and work with them. The result is a time lapse of a DSR top fuel hemi being torn down the put back together in like seven minutes. While this is a time lapse it is truly cool because they not only show the direct engine service but you also see the blower guy doing his job and the other crewmen doing theirs.
Top fuel engines have been gushed about since the 1970s when they started making power that everyone recognized was insane. Right now there’s nothing in the world of motorsports that compares to this particular engine so long as one cylinder makes more than 1,000hp.
Teams perform this service in 45-50 minutes between rounds with a boiling hot engine, a nuclear hot clutch and other maladies. The work is hard and unforgiving. Mistakes lead to the unemployment line in professional drag racing and it is important to be keyed in to the job you are doing and the people you are leading.
So here we go! A 7-minute hemi rebuild.
I’m getting a chubby just looking at all that. I noticed that there was an area ‘fuzzed out’ on top of the blower. Hard to imagine there might be some secret there for a few more horsepower. Great video!
