Tom Bailey States That Goals For New Drag Week Car Are 5.50s Quarter Mile!

Tom Bailey States That Goals For New Drag Week Car Are 5.50s Quarter Mile!

(Photo Credit: Tom Bailey Racing FB Page) – Wow, how about this for being serious? Tom Bailey stated on the Bailey Racing FB page that his goals for the next car he will roll out to Drag Week are the following: 5.50-second quarter mile performance, 300mph standing mile performance, and of course street manners enough to allow the car to be driven to and from the racing venue and through drag week. He gave no details about why type of car it would be, what type of engine he would be using or who was building the chassis, but those are big numbers. As we saw this year from Larry Larson, crazy power plants can be made to live through Drag Week, even those making in the neighborhood of 4,000hp as Larson’s is rumored to be.

Bailey joins Andy Frost as another guy who clearly believes that Larry Larson will be shoving the street legal quarter mile record into the five second zone next weekend at the Street Car Super Nationals in Las Vegas, which will be live broadcast here on BangShift.com. It is stunning on some level that the record, which stood at right about 6.4 seconds for so long has been dive bombed so hard and we have no reached a point that when a guy talks about building a street legal car that can run mid-5s we don’t laugh him out of the joint and offer him a straight jacket to relax in. It is not unthinkable that Larson could run in the 5.80s or 5.90s at Las Vegas. Will he go quicker than that? I’m no guy to judge that as I am the guy quoted in the current issue of Hot Rod as saying we’d never see a five second street legal car in our lifetimes. I have a feeling I will be chewing that page out of the magazine next weekend.

Some people have gotten on my case for sounding like a “supporter” of Andy Frost. I’ll be really clear about one thing. I am rooting for ALL these guys. The whole thing is turning into a drag strip version of the 1960s land speed wars that played themselves out on the Bonneville Salt Flats. Those were done with few people around and delayed media coverage. This stuff is happening on live video and at strips in front of huge crowds who love these cars. I hope these guys spend the next 10 years leap frogging each other! Oh, and like the land speed wars there are the known quantities like Tom, Larry, and Andy but is there an Arfons like character somewhere out there building something that no one knows about yet? We sure hope so.

HERE’S THE FULL STATEMENT FROM BAILEY RACING –

You need to blow the box apart! It is about pushing the limits and setting goals and going after it. There are a lot of followers out there that chase what somebody else has already done. Innovators create their own path even when they are told it isn’t possible. As we make changes the goals are simple 300MPH in the standing mile, and 5.50 quarter mile. And we will drive it home.

I’ll believe it when I see it. Remember, Sick Seconds was supposed to make the first 6-second pass and instead sat Drag Week out when it kicked the rods out, while Larry made the first 6-second pass. Aside from DW2013, this car really hasn’t been terribly successful.

Sick second has competed in 4 dragweeks with 2 different owners and only finished 1 ,but it WAS the one that counted. :~(

Cannot wait to see Larson and Lutz run in Vegas. Met them both at SEMA, most down to earth guys I’ve ever met. Bangshift will be broadcasting?

If he is serious, he will probably be the first to run a billet block engine that is basically a detuned, turbo’d TAFC engine. There is a lot of ground between 6.00 and 5.50- I look forward to see what he builds for this run. However, I get the feel from the comments the Unlimited racers have been saying, that Bailey will have to find some new competition next year.

Like i said in another blog the Vegas race will have some “ifs”…. if the track is prepared good enough and Larry can keep the tire shake away i think the 5’50’s are attainable for the S-10 cuz he was over 10lbs shy of the limits of the turbos.

Now what Mr Bailey wants to achieve could be attained, my opinion would be the new C7 promod bodied car with either a proline motor on one of morans billet motors, but the 300 mph standing mile i,m still debating cuz i dont think a drag slick would handle goin over a mile under power,so then your limited to alot smaller tire so i,m thinkin build the car with a changeable rear subframe so you can run a narrowed rearend at the dragstrip then change it to like a nascar style full width rearend subframe setup, which sounds totally badass ,i just wish i had a zillion dollars to do that myself!

But in my opinion i think drag week unlimited is gettin out of hand with the money bein spent on these vehicles. So i’m thinkin lets put a thorn in this race, since theres a few of them that can invest huge sums of money into a vehicle, lets combine HOT RODS 2 great road trips together and do a HOT ROD POUR TOUR DRAG,make them run for 2 weeks and a couple thousand miles and if their times arent within a 10 % average they are dq’d.

While I LOVE to see the innovation…. I’m afraid Drag Week is getting a long ways from its intended purpose, for guys with fast cars to bring them on a road trip.
Now fast guys are working all year to build a “Drag Week” car and drive it for one week.

I could be wrong…but I highly doubt that the unlimited cars of today are getting the street time after the event that the unlimited cars of just two years ago did.

5.5? Isn’t that only 1.8 seconds off the Top Fuel record?!?!?!?!? CrAzY!!

If Pro Mods have trouble getting down into the mid-5’s, can’t see a DW car doing it. I know different rules but don’t see it happening. Will like to see it but doubt it.

This is cool and all but it kind of feels like its turning into a giant dick swinging, rich guy, money fest. If you want to prevent the Unlimited class from getting completely out of hand, make all the cars run stock or steel shells and pump gas the entire trip and on every pass. Problem solved.

My money is on Larry. He is only teasing you right now. Once he sets that thing on KILL, its over. But then, bailey will just do what he did with Dennys Camaro, he will throw his wallet at them to be number 1. then ask steve if you can hold some tools so you can say you WORK on your car. Larry and Jeff, best guys EVER. Frost, Bailey, dream on, its Drag Week, not Drag GEEK!
