Top Sportsman Wreckage: Watch Wade Keifer Smash The Wall During Qualifying At NHRA Denver

Of all the runs I saw through the tower glass at the 2015 Mopar NHRA Mile High Nationals at Bandimere Speedway in Morrison, Colorado none compared to this rough ride that racer Wade Keifer took during the final qualifying session in the Top Sportsman class. Keifer and Greg Lair were lined up to make their final attempts at hustling their cars down the track as quickly as possible in the tradition of Top Sportsman qualifying and things seems to be askew from the first hint of movement. Weirdly it was Lair who appeared to be on a disastrous trip down the track as his car was skating all over the place off the starting line but ultimately it would be Keifer in his beautiful Corvette that bore the literal brunt of the badness.

While it is impossible to tell exactly what happened, it looks to us like Kiefer saw Lair’s car getting squirrly and moving around a bunch and in a move to protect himself he steered the car to the outside of the lane, getting into the loose stuff, and ultimately causing a loss of control.

Things got really scary when Kiefer’s car went into a flat spin at nearly 200 mph, crossed in front of Lair’s and backed into the wall very, very hard. You will see how hard this thing smacks the concrete and it’ll make you wince like it made us wince. The only positives we can glean from the whole deal are the facts that the thing went into the crash back first simply planting Wade harder into the seat. The fact that there was no fire or other secondary issues turned out to be a blessing as well.

Mike English is on the call for this lane swapping, wall banging, wild top sportsman pass.
