American Powertrain Parting Shift: A Turbocharged 13B Rotary And A Sequential Trans Make This An 8-Second Street Car

There’s someone about old, vintage Japanese cars that we dig around here. The styling is reminiscent of American muscle cars, their power plants were mostly weaklings but sometimes cool, and they make for neat hot rods when someone really gets after building one. This is one of those cars. Using A Garrett turbocharged 13B rotary engine and a sequential six speed manual transmission, this car runs 8s and is street legal in Australia, which is no small shakes.

Adding to the fact that the thing is immaculate and the guy can drive the wheels off of it, really makes this thing a treat. The car runs the quarter mile on little 8.5-inch wide slicks and you can see just how much driving that the operator has to do. It seems like the thing is virtually never actually hooked up to the track!

There’s something awesome about the sequential transmission as well. Like a rally car, the driver literally just gives the handle a tug back and the next gear is found…at full throttle. Unlike a Liberty or a Lenco, this thing only really needs to be bumped into the next gear not ripped really hard.

Tell us this little bastards doesn’t make you smile and we’ll call you a liar!
