This is another fun watch from our pal uncle Tony. This time he’s giving a great and basic education on the assembly of drum brakes. Why is that cool? Mainly because there are a lot of young guys and girls out there buying older cars who have no idea how they work or how they go together. When my son and I rebuild the rear axle of my tractor, we did the brakes and he was amazed at the simplicity of drums and how they world. Heck, the ones on the tractor are FULLY manual.
This is a quick walk through of work that experienced hot rodder have likely performed dozens or hundreds of time, but if you have never done it, this is a great walk through of the process. As you can tell, Tony’s been up in some drum bakes in his lifetime because this is more second nature to him than breathing.
If you have an old car and it is time to swap the brake shoes, watch this and then get after it!
It used to take me as long to attach those two pins from the back side as it did to do the rest of the entire job. Then I bought one of those tools you said you didn’t like at Hobo Freight for a couple bucks and all those problems went away. Wish I would’ve bought one years ago.
The brake spring pliers also work like a charm if you bother to learn how to use them. And they’ll prevent you from spearing a screwdriver through your hand.
