Video: Jeff Lutz Testing “The Evil Twin” 1957 Chevy In Oklahoma – This Is One Bad Fast Hombre

Jeff Lutz did the seemingly impossible over the off season. He secretly built what (on the surface) looked to be a replica of his beloved and previously raced on Drag Week 1957 Chevy. In fact, he managed to build a car that is nearly half a ton lighter than his old one, incorporates significant chassic upgrades, and makes vastly more power than his old combo did. Previous to today the only thing we have seen the car do it look cool at shows like PRI…now we can show you what it looks like on the racetrack. Spoiler alert: IT IS FAST AS HELL.

This video was taken at Thunder Valley Raceway in Noble, Oklahoma and it was taken recently. The one thing we are not privy to in the film is elapsed time numbers. The scoreboards are working but we can’t see them. Doing some insanely rudimentary work with a stopwatch and an itchy trigger finger, we’re figuring this car for a low, yes LOW six second runner. Nothing we got with our ghetto timing system was as accurate as a drag strip timing system but it was ball park enough for us to say that this thing has the potential to be the quickest and fastest car in the history of Hot Rod Magazine Drag Week….by a bunch.

We really love the fact that Jeff stuck with the true 1957 Chevy style body, kept the large by huge steel front bumper, and essentially refined what was already a very bad ass mousetrap. We joked about Drag Week being a nuclear arms race a couple of years ago and it isn’t even that much of a joke now, it is the truth. Guys are building legit low six second cars that are ragged edge street legal and can be driven like 1,000 miles over the course of a day. How much faster can it get? We’ll find out this September!

Lutz is great and will certainly be competitive in 2014.

But the efficient, logical “aero side” of the brain wonders just how much E.T. he left on the table by stubbornly playing to the crowd and sticking with the antique barn door body shape.
