It was a frightening day for veteran funny car driver Ron Capps yesterday when his NAPA Dodge had a parachute deployment problem at the top end and he entered the sand trap HARD. As you will see, Capps did everything he could to haul the car down but it still made it all the way to the catch net where the flopper nosed in and ended up on its roof. Stuck in the car, Capps was communicating with his teammates as the Safety Safari worked feverishly to get the machine turned on its side so Ron could escape.
We talked to Ron minutes after he got out of the car, while still standing in the trap and he told us many of the same things that he says to FOX’s John Kernan, mainly that he was getting pretty worked up when his fresh air supply ran out and he was trying not to concern his teammates more than they already were through radio communications. The amazing thing to us talking to Capps was the way he was able to relate all of the various steps he took while the car was closing in on the trap to make sure he minimized what was about to happen. From his plan to enter the trap at an angle to scrub off speed to the way he was working the brake, Capps is a true professional and it showed in the way he handled this situation.
Less than two hours later he was in his back up car. This guy is a boss.
Sucks to see RC in that situation. Thought this might be his weekend finally to win.
