Watch NMRA Racer Drew Lyons Pull A Three Gear Wheelstand In His Coyote Stock Mustang! Multiple Angles Of This One

The NMRA’s Coyote Stock class is one of the neatest in drag racing, especially if you are a fan of late model Ford performance. Competitors must obviously derive the power for their cars from a dual overhead cam Ford Coyote engine like the ones found in the current generation Mustang. They are limited severely on modifications to that engine, they must run a small tire, chassis modifications are limited and a Ford body ranging from the 1954 model year or newer must be used. As the high winding V8s make plenty of power right out of the box and because it is a sealed engine class, lots of the action comes down to the effectiveness of the chassis setup and the skills of the driver. Well, in this video you’ll see a driver who knows no fear and has a car that hooks as hard as is physically possible (literally).

The NMRA finals were held last weekend at Beech Bend Raceway in Bowling Green, Kentucky and that’s a place most BangShifters are familiar with. The historic track combines the elements of history and modern technology perfectly. The racing surface was replaced a few years back and it is bad ass fast when set up right…and it was set up right for Lyons. When he let the clutch out, the car dead hooked and immediately pulled the nose up. Rather than panic and lift, Lyons kept his foot on the carpet and just made his shifts as necessary. The result? A three gear wheelie and a round win! Not only did he put on the show from the hit of the throttle, the guy actually won the round! Rarely does it work out that way.

Coyote Stock cars are required to run a slick, no radials allowed. We mention this because there are two trains of thought when it comes to launching cars with the different tires. Typically, slick guys want to build up some wheel speed just to turn the tire and get it happy with the track on the hit of the throttle whereas a radial racer wants that tire to stick and go. Before consulting the rules and after first watching the video, I was convinced that Lyons car was on a radial. Wrong! As far as transmissions go, only C4 automatics and factory style stick shifts are allowed. You can hear Lyons working the shifter like a boss in this video.

Finally, it speaks to today’s media savvy culture, but we have three angles of this show below. One from in front of the car, one ON the car, and one from the stands. 15 years ago we would have had a still photo, now we have nearly perfect 360-degree documentation of the event. Unreal, right?
