It was a tension filled, high intensity, beautiful weekend in Pomona to close the season back in 1989. Fast forward 30 years and we’re looking at the same thing. We have basically every championship race wide open with top fuel and nitro funny car being the closest. In 1989 it was top fuel that was the closest with Amato and Gary Ormsby deadlocked with championship hopes coming into Sunday. This year it is Steve Torrence, Brittany Force, and Doug Kalitta log jammed together, each with a shot to close it out on Sunday, the last race day of the season.
This race is great for the action, the fires, the tension, and the fact that Steve Evans and Don Garlits are the two lead guys on the broadcast. There is a third man who literally has no idea what is going on and can barely get the letters NHRA out of his mouth. We’re guessing he flubbed it a few times and was being very deliberate as to not make any more mistakes.
The pro stockers never looked better than they did in 1989. Especially the third generation Firebirds which are perennial favorites in the “best looking drag cars of all time” discussion that we have with ourselves daily.
Who won? Watch and find out!
