This coming weekend the NHRA show will roll into the Houston area and action will commence at Royal Purple Raceway in Baytown, Texas. Long before it was known as Royal Purple Raceway the track hosted its first NHRA National event. Happily that was 30 years ago and even more happily the event was televised and all of the footage is on YouTube for our sharing enjoyment.
We’re leading here with the sportsman show that features the top alcohol dragster, top alcohol funny car, and super gas categories from the event. Unlike the early season nature of the race we’re heading to this week, the 1988 race was held on the backside of the 16 race schedule. With any luck it won’t be as roast toasty hot when we are down there this weekend.
This is an era when alky funny cars were still looking for the five second zone and oddly they used a weight rule that was based off of the cubic inch displacement of the engine. That was dispensed with for a minimum weight at some point over the last 30 years and the class remains one of our favorites around here. The family nature of alcohol racing lends itself to incredible stories and some of the most talented drag racers of all time dedicated themselves to the pursuit of top alcohol dragster and funny car titles.
Let’s go sportsman racing as it was 30 years ago!
